So, it is with great joy that I welcome Sandra Leesmith as she answers a few questions I asked her.
What served as a key inspiration for Love’s Refuge (characters, setting…etc)?
I’ll have to say that the inspiration for Love’s Refuge was definitely the setting. My aunt and uncle have a cabin on an island in Peugeot Sound. When my husband and I stayed with them, I just knew I had to come up with a story set on that island. So when I began to think of why would my character be living on such a primitive island and what would attract her to that kind of setting, Skye’s story evolved.
Are you a city girl or a country girl (or in between)?
I was born in San Francisco but grew up in small towns. I worked in Phoenix but every chance we had, my husband and I would go camping. We spent summers and holidays in the desert or forest. So I would have to say I’m a combination of both. I am a city girl, but a country girl at heart.
In Love’s Refuge, Danny was in dire need of a break and Leeza Island was just the getaway he needed. Do you have a personal getaway destination?
I don’t have a personal destination but we have always had an RV. The motorhome is basically my getaway and it goes wherever the weather is good. smile
Fear is a big theme in Love’s Refuge. What advice would you give an aspiring writer who’s having a hard time letting go of their fears?
There will always be things to fear in any endeavor and overcoming the fears is part of the process. My personal answer to fear has always been my faith. I personally find that when I face a fear it brings me closer to God. Good friends, critique partners and writing groups are great helps. It is reassuring to know that others have faced the same fears and survived. It also helps to talk to these people about your fears because they can offer ways to overcome those fears and move on.
If you were to be sent off on an island with no electricity and no way to get in touch with the outside world, what would you take with you?
I would definitely take my Bible. I would want my husband along because he is very skilled at survival skills in the wilderness. Of course the motorhome would be wonderful to have also. chuckle
What do you enjoy most about writing contemporary romance and what do you find most challenging?
It is always said that you need to write what you know. So writing contemporary romance is definitely what I know. The most challenging is finding ways to tell the story in an interesting and new way that will appeal to readers.
What’s your favorite part about being an author?
My favorite part about being an author is I can work anywhere. My husband and I love to travel and we can do that and I can still write.
I heard you had recently taken a trip to Spain. Having been to Spain myself, I’m curious to know what you enjoyed most about the trip.
How exciting that you have been to Spain also. Didn’t you just love it? I had never been to Europe and found the experience immensely enjoyable. There is so much history and the people are so friendly and helpful. I think that is what I enjoyed the most.
Oh yes! I definitely enjoyed my trip to Spain (Majorca). It was so much fun. I definitely agree that the people are majorly friendly.
Thank you so much Sandra for answering my questions! I absolutely enjoyed Love's Refuge and look forward to more of your work!
