Memory verse time for all my lovely people!
"Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
11Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
13Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
15And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
17And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
18Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;" (KJV)
My Memory verse of the Week: Ephesians 6: 10 -18
Wow! That's what I say each time I read this! Why? Simply because this is HEAVY STUFF! This is packed with Truth. Truth we can choose to accept and take action upon or truth we can choose to ignore. One thing is for sure, I AM NOT IGNORING THIS.
This passage is in the last chapter of the book of Ephesians. This was one of the last things Paul wrote to the church at Ephesus. The memory passage starts with "Finally". I believe Paul spoke of this last BUT it is certainly NOT least. He spoke it as a sort of WARNING to the church at Ephesus.
Please, let us try to grasp the idea. Many versions call this passage "The Whole Armour of God" which is what the passage speaks about but I also like the title 'The Message' gives it: A Fight to the Finish. These two titles speak of basically the same idea: a war or a fight.
In those days, a warrior did not go to war without wearing his armour. It would be completely stupid! And it’s the same today; soldiers wear a certain type of armour, although it’s modernized and not heavy and metallic. In the same way, we as followers of Christ HAVE to put on the WHOLE armour of God! Not putting it on in this present world would make us as stupid as the soldier that finds himself in the middle of a battlefield and realizes he has no weapon and no armour. May we not be like that in Jesus’ name!
Okay, so if as followers of Christ we have to put on God’s armour, it must mean we’re fighting a battle right? But which one? Paul also gives the answer. He doesn’t just stop at telling the Ephesians to be strong in the Lord and to put on the whole armour of God, he tells them why in nearly every verse.
Verse 11: “Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil”
The NCV says: “Put on the whole armor of God so that you can fight against the devil’s evil tricks”
Yes, the devil has evil tricks and friend, let me tell you, “your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8 NIV). IT IS THE TRUTH.
I find it very disturbing when Christians refuse to believe there is a devil who really does not like them and I pray for unbelievers who are oblivious to this fact. But THE GOOD NEWS: We are more than conquerors and we overcome the devil by the blood of the Lamb and the Word of our testimony! Jesus said “Be of good cheer I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). He has overcome for us! And because of this, we are overcomers! HALLELUJAH!
Paul didn’t stop at verse 11. Yes, the devil has evil tricks but he is not alone.
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” Verse 12 KJV.
Let’s just take a moment and imagine that for a second. We are not fighting against man. Man is not our problem. The problem comes from principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world and spiritual wickedness in high places. This clearly shows that even in the darkness, there are different ranks. I repeat, Paul did not just stop at the devil. The devil has cohorts. Please imagine that for a second. I did, and I was determined never to fold my arms again! Sometimes, we tend to be too comfortable, we think everything smells like roses and that everything’s covered in gold. We want to walk the face of the earth believing there is no threat. Verse 12 clearly states the threat.
I’m not saying be afraid. No! You have no reason to be when you serve the Most High King.
“That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2: 10-11 NLT).
I’m saying like Paul was saying to the Ephesians DON’T LET YOUR GUARD DOWN! This is no time to sit back with folded arms, this is no time to be comfortable, this is the time to put on the whole armour of God and fight! Time to engage in spiritual warfare!
Being from an African background, I understood from a small age that things could happen in the spiritual but I’ve come to realize that in the western world people find it so difficult to believe in the spiritual, they find it hard to believe in something they can’t see, something science can’t prove.
“For we live by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 2:5 NIV).
But whether we choose to believe it or not there are principalities and powers, rulers of the darkness of this world and spiritual wickedness in high places. This is not the time to ignore this fact. These are evil times and as much as I hate to admit it, they’re gonna get eviler:
“For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.
Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come” (Matthew 24: 5-13 NIV).
“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me” (Matthew 5:11 NIV).
“Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved” (Matthew 10: 21-22 NIV).
Yes, the times are evil, and only those who stand firm will be saved! But how do we stand firm? By putting on the whole armour of God. The WHOLE armour!
We need the truth and we need the breastplate of righteousness! We have to live righteous lives! We need the Good News of peace! Above all we need the shield of FAITH! Friend, remember: without faith, it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6). Faith is your shield! Hold on tight to it, don’t lose it! We need salvation! We need the Spirit! We need The Word of God! We need to PRAY ALWAYS!
“Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up” (Luke 18:1 NIV).
Remember to pray in the Spirit! Pray for your fellow Christians around the world (for example, missionaries facing persecution). And WATCH! The Bible says watch and pray! (Matthew 26:41). Let us keep watch and let us not sleep! May the Lord help us!
That’s my memory verse for this week! One I know I just have to learn by heart in order to remind me of Paul’s urgent words at all times!
It’s a slightly long passage so if you’re also learning it by heart with me, I recommend memorizing a verse or two per day!
The Lord’s our strength. Amen!
What are your thoughts on this passage? Do you feel like every day is a constant fight of one thing or another? Have you memorized this passage already? If so, how has it helped you?
Looking forward to reading your thoughts on this!
Thank you for reading!
GOD BLESS YOU!
